On behalf of AOTCA, Advisor Marcellus Wong attended the 54th Annual Meeting of Study Group on Asia-Pacific Tax Administration and Research (SGATAR) held on 15-18 September in Brisbane, as observer.
The Annual Meeting was hosted by the Australian Taxation office (ATO) and Delegates from tax authorities across 19 member jurisdictions in the Asia-Pacific regions (including Australia, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Macao, Philippines, Vietnam etc.) along with observers from international organizations (including AOTCA, Global Forum, IFDB, IMF, ADB, World Bank etc). The Meeting was convened to enhance cooperation and exchange expertise in tax administrations and international organizations.
The Commissioner of Australian Taxation Office was elected as the Chair of the 54th SGATAR Annual Meeting, and Fiji was also welcomed as a new SGATAR member.
Presentations from the Heads of Delegations (HODs) were delivered on three crucial topics :
1.Tackling Tax Crime and Identifying Fraud (Australia, Japan, Philipines, Indonesia, Cambodia)
2.Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Tax Administration (Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand)
3.Tax Reform Updates across Jurisdictions (China, Hong Kong, Fiji, Lao, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam)
The HODs also adopted the reports and recommendations of the three SGATAR Working Group Sessions on the following topics:
WG1: Transfer Pricing Considerations Relating to Intra-group Services Transaction
WG2: Challenges Arising from Digitalisation of Tax Administrations
WG3: Tax Compliance Risk Management – Improving Compliance in the Small Business Market
Singapore has been confirmed to host the upcoming 55th SGATAR Annual Meeting 2026 on 8-10 September 2026.
